RICHLAND — The adventures of Pookie & Ray Ray continue. Ivory James Welch, 54, was gunned down by police after he murdered his mom and two sisters because they didn’t throw him a birthday party. The massacre transpired on Mother’s Day, May 12, 2024 in Richland, Mississippi. According to police reports, 42-year-old Crystal Lynn Welch and her sister — Vicky Renee Welch, 56 — threw a lavish party for their mom, 76-year-old Ida Thomas Welch, to celebrate her special day. But a jealous Ivory blew a gasket, claiming they should’ve threw him a party too. His birthday was on May 11th. A bout of contretemps ensued. As the argument intensified, Ivory pulled out a gun and opened fire — killing all three. Then he got in his car and drove to Arizona. Law enforcement officials received tips on Ivory’s whereabouts and chased him down.

Rather than surrender, Ivory got into a shootout with Arizona State Troopers and lost his life. Man, Crystal had it going on. She was an attorney. She was board president for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Mississippi. She was an associate clinical professor at the Mississippi College School of Law. She led a successful effort in 2020 to replace the racist Mississippi state flag, which had incorporated the Confederate flag in its design. And, she succored Ivory financially even though he was a grown-ass man.

But, on the day of the bloodbath, an exasperated Crystal finally put her foot down.

She told Ivory to get off his slothful ass and get a job.

Crystal was correct, of course.

But it only exacerbated the sibling rivalry.

Social media reaction was venomous.

One commenter wrote, “I feel like he was on the down-low and jealous of women. This situation just aggravated what he was already feeling….. jealousy and hatred.”

Another chimed in with, “Not making excuses but they said he was mentally unstable and you never know what went on in their house. These mothers be putting kids against each other like it’s a competition.”

A third person added, “He was the only one in the family who didn’t have nothing going on. Jealous of his sisters, and mad because they didn’t celebrate his birthday like they did their mom? Probably was enabled his whole life. He couldn’t handle them putting their foot down.”

    I have a grown son here not working and this makes me think of getting him out of my house before the enemy strikes. Such a sad feeling right now. May their souls find peace and rest.

  28. It’s quite baffling how you could kill 3 family members at the same time and flee the scene thinking that you would nor be apprehended. That’s a sick mind. Then to tip it all shooting at the cops knowing fully well what you have done is beyond me. He has yo be mentally challenged. That is a simple minded person with mental issues. That could be why he was still living at home and feel entitled to his birthday being celebrated. When he was told it would not happen he flipped because his comprehensive ability was challenged. There could be no other explanation. They must have seen some signs of this!!! May their souls rest in peace!!!
