ATLANTA — Count retired NFL quarterback Cam Newton among those most impressed with Patrick Mahomes’ behind-the-back pass to Travis Kelce. The incredible play transpired during a preseason game featuring the Detroit Lions versus our back-to-back Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs. “Listen, dear Patrick Mahomes. You got some f*ckin’ nerve,” Cam ranted on his 4th & 1 podcast. “You are playing out of your f*cking mind to just, in a real NFL game… No matter if it’s preseason. No matter if it’s whatever. Who do you think you are? Yeah, you’re an MVP. Yeah, you’re player of the year. But, behind your back? The audacity. If I was Andy Reid, I would’ve pulled his ass into the damn meeting room and told his ass straight up, ‘Mothaf*cka, you the sh*t!” Truth be told, Mahomes completes behind-the-back passes all the time in practice.

But he reportedly received the green light from Coach Reid to try it in a game.

With Mahomes making passes like that, Cam is convinced he’s changed football forever.

“Patrick Mahomes has redefined what the quarterback position looks like, acts like, throws like and plays like,” he said.

“Coming from a football player who’s played this game. Doing sh*t like that, it was unheard of.”

Cam ain’t the only one who feels this way.

Last week, Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski told reporters Mahomes is changing football similar to what Steph Curry has already accomplished in basketball. Chicago Bears rookie Caleb Williams mimics Mahomes’ style every game. Ditto for Nebraska Cornhuskers quarterback Dylan Raiola, who bears a strong resemblance to No. 15. Dylan has Mahomes’ haircut and everything.

They’re f*cking clones.

Stefanski has taken notice.

“You know, it’s funny, it’s almost like — you know how Steph Curry changed basketball? I think Mahomes is changing football,” he said during a radio interview with 92.3 The Fan.

“You watch quarterbacks come out and play that style, they comport themselves like him. So I would not be surprised if you started seeing that around, certainly, our league. You’re going to see kids in high school trying it.”

Cam also mentioned he’s a big fan of Mahomes’ unorthodox throwing mechanics, which include no-look passes and sidearm tosses.

“How he throws the football is not fundamentally sound,” he preached.

“Because at the end of the day, the name of the game for a quarterback is to complete the pass. Get the ball there. Throw it accurately in your way and nobody else’s way. Patrick Mahomes throws off his back foot a lot. His feet are like planted in a way where he don’t generate a forward torque. If I could throw [a perfect pass] and all my momentum is going through… Patrick Mahomes don’t need that sh*t, man! Patrick Mahomes, bro, keep being you. Goodness gracious almighty. I love it.”

Do you agree with Cam and Stefanski?

Has Mahomes changed the game?

  1. Chiefs fan, love this. But this man has himself a fucking professional personal glazer, nice.

  2. Im a broncos fan but patty just won a superbowl he can do whatever he wants

  3. If he tries that in a regular season game somebody is going to hit him late or cheap shot him to send a message, be great but respect the opposition…… that’s disrespectful af!!

  4. I feel like he got that from the goat lebron he wanted to be the first to do it because in his mind he the goat

  5. After the game Mahomes claimed that Kelce screwed up and ran the wrong route, and the behind-the-back pass was his only option. Later in the week some reliable Chiefs’ insiders said it’s a set play, and that the Reid and the OC have tried to get Pat to run it but he’s been reluctant to do it.

  6. Who else thought Cam was about to hate on him at first? I’m so happy He didnt he supported him instead. lol #Brothers 👍

  7. Could never understand why NFL players shy away from the behind-the-back pass. They do it all the time in rugby. Great way to send defenders in the wrong direction. And it’s nowhere near as high-risk as pundits claim. The limitations you have on movement in that direction with your arm means it can be delivered consistently and accurately – provided the receiver understands that it’s always a possibility and he needs to anticipate such.

  8. Mahomes is already greater in his sport than curry is in basketball. Mahomes is bron level.

  9. Coach Reid said they practice that BTB play every time they’re on the field “just in case” it’s ever needed.

  10. I don’t normally watch Cam. But damn, this was entertaining and informative. I enjoyed the hell out of it.

  11. I never knew Cam had this level of charisma. I’m hooked. Dude is twice as entertaining as most of the people on TV.

  12. What Mahomes did was amateurish and totally disrespects the game of football. The audacity! Who does he think he is? He must be punished as an example to the youngsters playing this great game!! He should be taught a lesson and be cut immediately. IMMEDIATELY. And then he should sign a contract with the Minnesota Vikings. 😆

  13. you can call him magic Mahomes if you want to …but if we’re telling the truth he’s Patrick Mother Fucking Mahomes️

  14. Now how many kids are gonna be trying this and losing the game lol, also when is madden gonna implement these abilities?

  15. Mahomes could’ve played professional baseball. Could have even possibly played professional basketball. First dude I’ve ever seen feel comfortable enough to apply a multi sport background into a single sport or play style.

  16. Go Chiefs Kingdom!! Cam Newton is THE man for complimenting my quarterback!!
