AUGUSTA — Here’s another reason to keep stepparents and significant others away from your children. Tanya Faye Tripp, 42, and her husband, 45-year-old Leon Lamar Tripp, were thrown in the slammer after they were complicit in the murder of Tanya’s 16-year-old daughter, Latania Janell Carwell. The filicide transpired in Augusta, Georgia. According to police reports, Latania was reported missing by her mother on April 17, 2017 — her birthday. Pretending to be distraught, Tanya called 911 and told the operator Latania left home with Leon — her evil stepfather — in the early morning hours to help a man fix his car, and her daughter never returned. Richmond County Sheriff Richard Roundtree, his deputies and the entire community searched for months. People donated money. A year later — on March 8, 2018 — Latania’s remains were found in a shallow grave in the backyard of a nearby residence.
After detectives determined Tanya and Leon worked in cahoots, they were arrested together at a DeKalb County truck rental office. Both were charged with malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, cruelty to children in the first degree, and concealing the death of another. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty. During interrogation, Tanya ratted out her husband — telling officers she had zero contact with Leon after filing Latania’s missing person’s report.
But phone records show they had several chinwags.
Investigators also learned Leon and Tanya solicited a hitman to kill Latania three times between 2015 and 2016.
Social media reaction was venomous.
One commenter wrote, “How does a woman get so desperate to keep a man (even a pathetic piece of a man like him) that she would willingly sacrifice her own child? Latania’s teacher said she had changed. She became withdrawn and started sitting in the back of the classroom, something she had never done before. Was that an indication that she was being sexually and physically abused by the stepfather?”
Another chimed in with, “I do not know why in the world they bring these no good sons of bitches in their homes over their kids. I have 3 girls. There aint’ no way in hell I would invite the devil in my house to violate my kids. I WILL MEET YOU IN HELL!!!”
A third person added, “Fat, nasty-ass of a mother wanted the nigga instead of her daughter!”
Latania was a sophomore at T.W. Josey High School.
She’s gone but not forgotten.

I think the mom started seeing the stepdad looking at her daughter with lust in his eyes. (She was only 13 when they started planning her demise, she wasn’t looking at him in that way) Anyway, the mom knew that she was losing his interest and blamed her own daughter. I believe, that Leon, whom I’m not going to call a step father..Was hitting on Janelle. And Janell told Latanya, whom I’m not going to call a mother .And Latanya , became jealous and enraged..Because , she thought Janelle was lying..Or trying to steal her POS man..And Leon was lying about not hitting on Janelle..So Latanya sided with Leon…Janelle probably , threatened to expose him / them..And this is probably, the reason, she started acting out in school..She felt as if she didn’t have anyone , she could trust. To turn to…Poor Baby Girl..Janelle, I hope and pray, that you find peace in Heaven..That you didn’t find , here on earth…SOOOO Sad.
