‘Good Times’ legend John Amos deceased at age 84
John Amos died in Los Angeles.
Blog King, Mass Appeal
LOS ANGELES — “DAMN, DAMN, DAMN!!!” John Amos, who starred as patriarch James Evans Sr. on the 70s family sitcom “Good Times,” has migrated to that big ghetto in the sky. John — who had dementia — kicked the bucket in late August amid complications from congestive heart failure. He was 84. John’s daughter — Shannon Amos — broke the sad news on Instagram. But, surprisingly, she learned of John’s demise on Tuesday (October 1st) after reading about it in the news one month after he died. Ain’t that a bitch? “I am without words… Our family has received the heartbreaking news that my Dad, John Allen Amos Jr., transitioned on August 21st,” Shannon wrote along with a video of her and John dancing to ‘Dance with My Father’ by Luther Vandross. “We are devastated and left with many questions about how this happened 45 days ago, learning about it through the media like so many of you. This should be a time of honoring and celebrating his life, yet we are struggling to navigate the wave of emotions and uncertainties surrounding his passing. Still, there is some semblance of peace in knowing my father is finally free.”
Shannon and family members are accusing John’s son, Kelly Christopher Amos, and other relatives of elder abuse — claiming they purloined his cash while treating him like sh*t. The family released the following statement: “Over the past year, John Amos was isolated from his family and close friends by Kelly ‘KC’ Amos, Eugene Brummet and Belinda Foster. Despite our repeated attempts to maintain contact, KC prevented access to him, controlled and monitored his calls and severed ties with John’s daughter Shannon Amos, his brother Leslie ‘Syl’ Franklin, his grandchildren Quiera Colston and Jhazz Williams, his business manager Paul Baldessare, his god-daughter Amy Goudy, his niece Sherri Korsun, his former accountant and other close family members, friends, and loved ones.”
The family also said, “KC portrayed an image of a close father-son relationship on social media, but the reality was far more complex. KC often gave John verbal prompts to create a narrative on social media that was not reflective of the truth. We were deeply concerned that our father may have been neglected and isolated during his final days as we received photos from concerned neighbors and a medical professional.”
John’s death certificate shows he was cremated 9 days after his quietus.
KC, who has his ashes, released the following statement through the Hollywood Reporter: “It is with heartfelt sadness that I share with you that my father has transitioned. He was a man with the kindest heart and a heart of gold… Many fans consider him their TV father. He lived a good life. His legacy will live on in his outstanding works in television and film as an actor.”
John played football at Colorado State University.
He once tried out for training camps with the Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs of the American Football League.
Produced by Norman Lear, “Good Times” ran from 1974 ’til 1979.
John’s credits also include “Roots,” “Coming to America” and “The West Wing.”
If you recall, he was fired from “Good Times” after the third season because he threatened to beat the sh*t out of the show’s white writers for portraying negative stereotypes of black people.

Wow he died 45 days ago ..and they just told his daughter today. 😮
“You got to bring ass to get ass”
Classic line!! RIP Mr Amos.
RIP
King Jaffe
And now
Cleo McDowell.
😢
John Amos was 84. Very few people make it to 80 or 90 even. A lot of black men don’t make it through their 50’s. He left hell of an imprint on the hearts of massive amounts of black people.. world wide. Atleast he saw old age and he died; having achieved great accomplishments.
Rest well but what I didn’t overstand was my guy was married to a white woman and he was representing the black father in the black people’s households that didn’t sit to well with me because to be honest with y’all we can,t go against ourselves by dating or marrying someone outside of our race and want to or try to represent our culture at the same time,,,it doesn’t add up 😕😕 But rest well Mr. John Amos and condolences to your family as well
Good times was terrible when he left, especially with Carl and Thelma’s husband 🤮
Don’t forget his role on Mary Tyler Moore show. He was a rare African American face on there. I pray to the Lord Jesus his kids get their relationship together. God bless that family. 🙏🏽🙏🏽✝️
If this man truly died on August 21st, it would be on my birthday and what is so ironic is I was born the same year this show aired. I am hurt because like Sherman Hemsley, these great men died with no dignity and respect and they deserved much better. I’m just learning that people who are extremely talented and gifted gets the worse treatment. I hope one of the kids did not do it out of jealousy and greed. We do not know what happened but just saying I hope not. This makes it even sadder for me because it seems like no one wanted him to have the spotlight (if this is true) but God is watching though.
Shame on his kids, they were always a troubled people, of how they treated him. John Amos is definitely a father figure to most black Americans and he will be missed dearly. RIP #John Amos!
If he was mistreated and stolen from…. it will come to the forefront!!
Something smells fishy about this whole situation!!
It now makes me wonder if there was a funeral that the daughter was not made aware of.
The network fired John Amos from Good times due to him standing up for the deplorable ways they were trying to present black folks as….he took one for the team… Bless him, Rest in Peace 🙏😇
So she didn’t talk to her father for over 45 days?? 🤔
Sometimes the loudest ones are the perpetrators in elder abuse cases. The son may not be the one taking advantage. If there were signs of elder abuse, the hospital and financial institutions have the obligation to report it but it doesn’t sound like they did. If he passed at the hospital then the need for autopsy would be mute since they would have a clear reason for his demise. It is very odd that he didn’t notify the rest of the family immediately, no matter the issues they were having. Hard to discern what actually happened in these situations. This is why it is important for wealthy families to consider corporate trustees to handle care, financial matters, and estate settlement. That way family can be mad at someone else instead of each other, and can rule out elder abuse for financial gain.
I knew something was up about John Amos. I follow his instagram faithfully and the siblings always fought against one another and John put out a video saying he wanted them to stop fighting. Now all those videos are gone….
Something is not right here. He passed on Aug 21, but it was announced on Oct. Who is responsible for this? Money has got to be involved.
SHAME on his son. K.C. seems completely and utterly deranged. I was my beloved late Mother’s Caregiver for over 7 years. I could have never done what John’s son did to his Loved ones.
Shannon looks like her Dad.
❤John Amos
Think about it…if they only found out through the media 45 days later…that means they haven’t so much as called to inquire about their dad in at least 45 days. She said the last time she saw her dad was in June 2023 which was 16 months ago. Please everyone, don’t judge. Our family has literally gone through the same situation recently. My dad took care of my grandad with dementia while all the other siblings didn’t call, didn’t visit, didn’t contribute financially to his care. They literally didn’t care and were getting on with their lives while we were dealing with the absolute chaos. But as soon as he sold his house for £410,000 then everybody started calling to check about his will because he “doesn’t have the capacity” etc. I’ve seen firsthand how it can be 3 siblings vs 1 sibling and yet it’s the 3 siblings who visit…ask for money…do their little tiktok videos…and then go missing for 6 months.
Who cremates someone and notifies the family a month later. This life sucks because of money. damn
KC is so low down… He has been stealing from his dad for years
So she’s blaming her brother and her brother is blaming her🤔
R.I.P. John Amos 😢🌹 I seen Good Times today and I seen him in Die Hard 2 and I think I seen him in Coming to America, I love him in Die Hard 2. Die Hard 2 is a great movie.
I sure hate that Good Times has been in the media lately for two bad reasons. First the god awful Netflix reboot, and now the loss of John Amos/James
Never saw him in a role he didn’t perfect. Great actor.
R.I.P. John Amos 📺⚘️🎬🇺🇸🙏🏽💔
Now both Amos and Louis Gossett Jr. died this year. Both in Good Times and Roots.
KC was always jealous of Shannon cause she was her daddy’s twin and a daddy’s girl.
Rip John Amos, prayers to his whole family and children!!! 😢😢❤❤❤🙏🏾
Some mixing isnt good..that son looks devilish….
That’s why we need to make a will
Greed is an awful thing. It destroys everything it touches. How could KC not let the rest of the family know that he had passed away. And to add insult to injury, he cremated him without allowing the rest of the family the opportunity to pay their respects.
Sounds like Fraud, neglect and possibly murder.
Why hasn’t anybody heard from her until her father passed away. How is it she didn’t know her Dad was dead? If she had been visiting regularly she would have known. Nobody said that he died a suspicious death. The dang gone man was 80 something years old and when he spoke he appeared to be of sound mine and body and was very well spoken. Why do siblings do this foolishness once the parent passes away
Damn, so sad the way he was treated in his later years. Some of these children are evil the way they treat their parents when they get up in age.
I don’t believe her, John was happy as hell with his son. She trusted doctors that tells me she ain’t right
Lol , once good times was out I was just about 15 years old and I had a major crush on John Amos 😅 I not only liked his looks but I also liked his character. Him and Muhammad Ali was two of my favorites. Rest in peace dear John 🙏💕
He was married to a whyt woman and had 4 or 5 kids which I didn’t know til recently! Be careful when marrying the preference! You can pay a hefty price !RIP John Amos !!! 🙏🏽🕊️
They murdered him and needed to cremate his body to hide evidence of it…
Man all the legends are leaving us
AS A TAROT READER. I READ THIS SITUATION and the son of Amos done the right thing keeping her away from their dad. She plays the victim now, but she was awful to her dad and it was all about the money. He was able to die in peace!!❤
Death brings out the worst in ppl… family members are the worst
Shannon had tried OVER & OVER to get her father AWAY from her crazy brother but no one listened. This is an OUTRAGE!!!! Im sickened by this!!! Mr. Amos deserved better!! Dear God! My heart goes out to the family and I hope that abuser (the son) gets investigated and charged with many crimes!!
One of the few people I wish I could have met in person.
John Amos was a amazing actor , but at the end of
the day I hope he knows God..🙏🏿
This man had two children. A son and a daughter. When Malcom X said chickens come home to roost – it’s real. HOWEVER YOU RAISED YOUR CHILDREN, IT SHOWS. How can there be such enmity between siblings that the son never told his sister their father had died? What kind of human beings did you raise? The daughter found out 45 days later with the rest of us that her father was dead. To me. a person who does that is capable of murder. #KCAmos should be ashamed but he’s probably not. John Amos may have been good on screen, but he was a suspect person in real life…
The same thing happened to my grandfather. These people are disgusting!
Shannon is an exact replica of her talented Dad. Roots. Let’s do it again, mary Tyler Moore, Good Times, coming to America. Maude, Need i say more??!!! Thank you Mr.Amos for sharing your talent and for making me laugh , cry, and think. Rest well. Know that you were loved.❤
WOW! Shannon is the REAL DEAL. What she says is probably true. I had a sister who did this to us when my dad died but we BEAT HER IN COURT.
If it’s any consolation, that same sister of mine got hers and died tragically.
Elder neglect and abuse is a fact of life unfortunately in our rotten society.
