GUINEA — In Africa, they take their football seriously. Government officials are investigating after 56 people were killed during a soccer stadium stampede. The sanguinary ordeal transpired on December 1, 2024 in Guinea at a local tournament honoring Mamady Doumbouya — the country’s military leader. It was also captured on video. According to reports, all hell broke loose when a referee made a questionable call. Fans threw stones and police countered with tear gas — sparking a massive melee. Many spectators — including small children — were trampled, while others tried to escape by leaping a high fence. “The stone throwing started and the police joined in, firing tear gas,” eyewitness Amara Conde told reporters. “In the rush and scramble that followed, I saw people fall to the ground, girls and children trampled underfoot. It was horrible.”

Guinea’s Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bah disseminated his exasperation via social media. “The government deplores the incidents that marred the football match between the Labe and Nzerekore teams this afternoon in Nzerekore,” he tweeted. “During the stampede, victims were recorded. The regional authorities are working to restore calm and serenity among the population.”

  1. someone needs a way of getting it through to football fans that it doesn’t actually matter who wins or loses, so getting worked up over a match is pathetic

  2. OMG it’s a football game it’s supposed to be fun this is a horror story.

  3. Reminds me of the very notorious May 9th in Ghana. Very unfortunate.

  4. Let’s be honest here, sporting events like these encourage violence from the fans. Sports are like a battle, and the people who support their soldiers battling for them, end up becoming soldiers themselves.

  5. And these are the kind of people that liberals want to just invite into our country

  6. I find it ridiculous when black people blame all their problems on colonialism. What did the white man have to do with this. I say this as an Indian and not a white man

  7. Horrible, sad situation. Hope the injured recover. Sad for the grieving families.
