ORLANDO — “🎵It’s so hard to say goodbye to yesterday.🎵” Greg Gumbel has migrated to that big broadcast booth in the sky. The legendary sports broadcaster, who called games on CBS for 5 decades, kicked the bucket on Friday following “a courageous battle with cancer.” He was 78. “It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of our beloved husband and father, Greg Gumbel,” his wife, Marcy, and daughter, Michelle, wrote in a joint statement. “He passed away peacefully surrounded by much love after a courageous battle with cancer. Greg approached his illness like one would expect he would, with stoicism, grace, and positivity. He leaves behind a legacy of love, inspiration and dedication to over 50 extraordinary years in the sports broadcast industry; and his iconic voice will never be forgotten. Greg’s memory will forever be treasured by his family, dearest friends, colleagues and all who loved him.” Gumbel, if you recall, missed last year’s “March Madness” due to what CBS officials described as “family health issues.”

Now we know why.

The 5’7″ African-American, who articulated like a white man, spent two stints (1988-93, 1998-2024) at CBS. Gumbel also hosted “The NFL Today” and he called Super Bowls XXXV (2001) and XXXVIII (2004). He’s a legend. “The CBS Sports family is devastated by the passing of Greg Gumbel,” David Berson, president and CEO of CBS Sports, said in a statement. “There has never been a finer gentleman in all of television. He was beloved and respected by those of us who had the honor to call him a friend and colleague.”

Los Angeles Lakers legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson echoed a homogenous sentiment via social media.

“I’m saddened to hear about the passing of longtime and legendary broadcaster and friend Greg Gumbel,” he wrote.

“Greg was an African-American pioneer.”

Gumbel is a 1967 graduate of Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa.

His brother, Bryant Gumbel, is also a sportscaster.

Both of ’em are light with curly hair.

Greg, RIP.

Cancer’s a bitch.

  2. Along with John Madden, Pat Summerall, Al Michaels, Jack Whitaker, and the other legendary all-around television sports broadcasters, you can go ahead and add Greg Gumbel to that distinguished list. Rest in Peace.

  3. I had no idea he was that old – he aged gracefully, he performed gracefully, and he carried himself gracefully. He had a great voice and intensity for calling sports, and was one of my favorites. R.I.H.
