MONTGOMERY — “If I can’t have you, no one can.” Rogers McCloud Jr., 20, was thrown in the slammer after he murdered his girlfriend, 21-year-old Gennia Grimes, because she dumped him. The femicide transpired on March 27, 2025 in Montgomery, Alabama. Both were students at Alabama State University. While traveling down U.S. Highway 80 East, Gennia told Rogers she was sick and tired of his bullsh*t and she wanted out of the relationship. Rather than respect her wishes, Rogers pulled out a gun and opened fire — striking Gennia in the head. The Criminal Justice major was treated by paramedics before being airlifted to the hospital, where she ultimately died. Rogers told investigators Gennia committed suicide. But, thanks to forensic corroboration, they found out he was a goddamn lie. “The evidence just wasn’t linking up the way he described it,” Sheriff Derrick Cunningham told reporters. Rogers was arrested and charged with capital murder. He’s facing the death penalty.
Gennia’s mom, Angela Grimes, said she knew her daughter was breaking up with Rogers. “My baby did not deserve that,” Angela bemoaned. “This was somebody she loved. When he came here [to visit], my family treated him like he was our family.” Rogers played football at Alabama State and Gennia was a dancing doll despite her corpulent frame. They appeared to be a match in heaven.
But, turns out, their union was nothin’ but hell.
A school spokesperson released the following statement: “Alabama State University mourns the loss of Gennia Grimes, a Junior Criminal Justice major. We extend our deepest condolences to her family, friends, and all who were touched by her kindness and spirit. Our thoughts and prayers are with her loved ones during this difficult time.”
Social media reaction was equally melancholic.
One person wrote, “This is horrible! She was a STAR🌟.”
Another chimed in with, “Why are college kids CARRYING GUNS???”
A third person added, “She outshined him and he couldn’t handle it.”
Rogers and Gennia dated for two years.
They have an infant son together.
